England under-21 manager Aidy Boothroyd says that Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham needs to get his head down and work his way back into the senior set-up.
Abraham was capped twice by England at senior level over the course of last season and has now dropped back down to the under-21’s.
Aston Villa completed the signing of Abraham on a season-long loan from Chelsea on the loan transfer deadline day.
He spent last season on loan to Swansea, as they were relegated to the Championship.
Abraham was able to score eight goals for the Swans in their difficult campaign, a season after he scored 23 Championship goals for Bristol City on loan.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Boothroyd said this:
Very rarely do you get a player’s development that is on a smooth upward path.
It is up and down, a rollercoaster. With Tammy, he has had an opportunity, he’s played (for the senior side), he’s got his cap, but now it’s about getting his head down and fighting his way back into that position.
That’s just the beginning for him, not the end of it. It is a goal reached but now it is a question of how he can get 10 caps, 20 caps, 30 and so on. Tammy has had a taste of it and now he needs to fight his way back.
