Manchester United’s season reached a new low with a humiliating League Cup defeat at home to Derby County on Tuesday night.
Jose Mourinho’s men begun the game well enough and would have been out of sight had Romelu Lukaku finished two glorious chances in the first half.
It was a performance riddled with sub-par individual displays, but one player who did not disappoint was Anthony Martial – an endlessly energetic and penetrative influence from out wide.
With that in mind, here is how Man United could line up for Saturday’s visit to West Ham United, which has suddenly taken on enormous significance.
United’s systemic attacking shortcomings – pointed out by Paul Pogba after drawing with Wolves over the weekend – were the root problem of the loss to Derby. There is no doubt about that. At the same time, however, they would not have mattered had Lukaku taken the chances which fell his way.
The Belgian has looked out of sorts in front of goal against Young Boys, Wolves and now Derby. Martial, on the other hand, seems hungry and dangerous. Placing him up front at the expense of Lukaku, with Marcus Rashford coming back into the team having served his suspension, feels like the right way to inject some life into this bedraggled team.
