Manchester United’s old demons resurfaced against Wolverhampton Wanderers and they are not going away any time soon.
The lack of connection between players going forward and their flimsiness at the back meant Wolves, who cancelled out Fred’s first half strike soon after the break, actually looked like the better team for most of the game at Old Trafford.
Tuesday night’s League Cup clash with Derby County provides Jose Mourinho to put out a fresh team and restore some positivity around the club.
Here is how Man United could line up against the Championship side, with Andreas Pereira coming into the starting XI.
Pereira came on against both Young Boys and Wolves and, in two very different contexts, very much looked the part like he had done for all of pre-season.
He uses the ball quickly, methodically, and with a certain finesse. At the base of midfield, with Paul Pogba creating things further forward, he could be an ideal stabiliser against a Derby side which, like Wolves, will sit back and wait for its moment.
Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard were nothing short of non-existent against Wolves. Replacing them with the under-used Juan Mata and Anthony Martial, who was sensational against Young Boys, feels like a logical move.
