Marouane Fellaini opted to stay at Manchester United over the summer because he thought it would serve as the best way to keep him in contention for the Belgian national side, according to reports from Belgium.
Many wanted the Belgian, who only managed two starts in seven months at Old Trafford last season, to leave the club once his contract expired over the summer.
But after weeks of twists and turns in the media, Man United announced that Fellaini had signed a two-year contract at the club with the option to extend for a further year.
And according to Belgian media outlet Het Nieuwsblad, the main reason underpinning Fellaini’s decision to stay at the club was the hope it would optimise his chances of representing Belgium.
The 30-year-old performed brilliantly over the World Cup, changing the game from the bench against Japan in the last 16 and dominating the Brazil midfield in the quarter-final, and Mourinho will certainly be pleased he finally decided to stick at Old Trafford.
And following a fallow transfer window, you can perhaps see why: that United failed to capture either a senior full-back or central defender – two main priorities – suggests they would have got nowhere near finding a replacement for Fellaini either.
