Pundit reveals who Mourinho should've made captain

Pundit Jamie Redknapp believes Paul Pogba should’ve been made Manchester United captain by Jose Mourinho ahead of Antonio Valencia.

The Ecuadorian was handed the armband following Michael Carrick‘s retirement though the move has pleased too many fans.

Valencia was vice-captain of the club last season and has been at United for a long period of time but there’s a feeling there are better options.

Supporters would’ve preferred to have seen Pogba or even Romelu Lukaku become captains following their inspirational performances at the World Cup.

Redknapp though has given the nod to the Frenchman instead, stating the way he commanded his nation’s dressing room was impressive.

According to Manchester Evening News, Jamie said: “I saw a leader in that dressing room full of superstars and big-name players and they all listened to him.

“I think it would have been a great move for Manchester United and even Jose to start this year because you picked [Antonio] Valencia as a right-back as your captain, why not make Paul Pogba captain and say to him: “You’re my man. Here, there’s the pressure on you now, put the armband on, see how you like it.

“And put it back on him. I think he needs a manager to put his arm around him and tell him, ‘You’re the man’, little bit like Deschamps did for him. And you see now a player that’s a world champion.”

There’s already pressure on Paul to deliver performances for the Red Devils in a similar manner to how he did for France this summer.

The midfielder was instrumental in his country’s run to winning the World Cup and was even named man of the match in the final.

It was clear to see Pogba was maturing right before fans’ eyes and if he can carry that to club level then it won’t be long before he’s named captain.

Mourinho has already discussed how supporters should get used to Antonio being injured due to his age so perhaps the former Juventus man will still get his shot at leadership.
