Man United target backed to become one of the best

Kasper Schmeichel has backed Leicester City star and Manchester United target Harry Maguire to become one of the best in the world in his position.

The Englishman emerged as a potential signing for Jose Mourinho following his performances in this summer’s World Cup.

Maguire was central to the Three Lions’ run to the semi-final and it certainly raised his value as well as raised interest.

It was claimed Mourinho wanted to buy the centre-back having chased one all summer but the Foxes made it clear he’s not for sale.

Schmeichel clearly believes Harry has the talent to go all the way in terms of developing and it may be why the Portuguese is so interested.

According to Goal, Kasper said to Sky Sports: “I don’t think it’s going to be his year, I think it’s going to be his decade.

“Over the next 10 years or so, when he is going to be hitting his prime, he is going to be one of the best defenders in the world.

“He’s got absolutely every attribute you could possibly want in a defender. He’s an exceptional football player, very intelligent, he can see a pass and pick it out, positionally he’s very astute and very clever.

“He’s a big lad so on set-pieces, both for and against, he’s a threat and for me Harry can go as far as he wants.

“He was Player of the Year here last season, Players’ Player of the Year, so that says everything about his level last season.

“His work ethic, his attitude, I’m in no doubt that he’s going to kick on this season and then he’s going to be established as one of, if not the best defender in the Premier League.”

There’s no doubt Maguire would add obvious quality to United’s backline but the question has to be asked over what kind of defender they want.

Jose already has potential stars in his backline in the form of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly so a defensive leader is more of what’s needed.

It’s why the need to sign Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld is so great since he would add much needed experience to an otherwise shaky defence.

The Red Devils have often been bailed out by David de Gea‘s top performances but they can’t rely on him forever.
