Paul Pogba has come out and explained his peculiar run-up for the penalty that sent Manchester United on their way to victory on the opening day of the 2018-19 Premier League season.
Man United defeated Leicester City 2-1 at Old Trafford courtesy of Pogba’s third-minute penalty and Luke Shaw‘s first career goal late in the day to kick off the new campaign in fine fashion on Friday night.
Pogba certainly caught the eye with his performance against Leicester, but his slow, agonising run-up also made the headlines although it was a successful one which ultimately contributed to a big win.
Speaking to MUTV after full-time, Pogba explained himself: “It’s my style of taking penalties, I’ve always done. I know it’s long, it can disturb the goalkeeper, but that’s how I take it.
“The most important thing is that the ball goes in, because if I miss, I know what I’ll hear afterwards,” the 25-year-old added.
The France international has been heavily linked with a move away from United this summer but was named captain for the season curtain-raiser and will act as one of the more experienced members of Jose Mourinho’s squad this term.
He’ll be hoping to impress once again in the visit to Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium next Sunday.
