Luke Shaw stands very clear on his ambitions at Man United

Luke Shaw has stated his ambition to become one of the best left-backs in the world following his impressive display in Friday night’s 2-1 win over Leicester City at Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old scored his first ever career goal, in front of the Stretford End and all, as well as the match-winner after Paul Pogba’s third-minute penalty in the 2018-19 Premier League opener.

Following a frustrating transfer window, there were no signs of negativity whatsoever amongst fans as Man United claimed their first three points of the season, and Shaw was one of many talking points after full-time.

Sky Sports grabbed Shaw after he was named Man of the Match and he spoke incredibly well, laying out his ambitions very clearly: “It was my first goal and that is all that was important, it doesn’t matter how I scored.

“I was meant to come inside and I managed to get in front of him [his marker] and put it in. It’s the best feeling I have had in my career.

“I have worked really hard over the pre-season and I had a lot of time to reflect, and work on what I needed to. Even tonight, I know I can be better and that is what I want to keep showing the manager.

“I don’t want to speak too soon after one game, but I want to be up there with the best left-backs in the world.

“I have the foundations to do that here with the manager and my team-mates at Manchester United. I want to play for England and I want to be involved again.

“I don’t think I was playing as well as I could with my attacking capabilities last season, and that’s what I’m known for.”

With Ashley Young still recovering from his World Cup exploits in Russia over the summer, Shaw has a huge chance to stake a claim for the starting spot at left-back and is expected to start in next Sunday’s meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion on the south coast.

The 18-19 season could finally be the breakthrough nine months the former Southampton prospect has been working towards since joining United in 2014, so certainly keep an eye out on how he develops.
