Jose Mourinho described Paul Pogba as a monster after he helped Manchester United beat Leicester City 2-1 in the 2018-19 Premier League curtain-raiser.
Pogba opened the scoring at Old Trafford with a third-minute penalty before Luke Shaw bagged his first career goal late on to snatch the points, making Jamie Vardy’s stoppage-time header simply a consolation.
The France international has been heavily rumoured to be keen on leaving Man United this summer to move to Barcelona or former club Juventus, but he seemed as focused as ever on Friday night.
After full-time, Mourinho hailed Pogba in his post-match press conference because of his willingness to play more minutes than what was expected of him: “Pogba was a monster.
“We thought maximum [he would play] 60 minutes, but he managed more than 80. It was not a hard decision [to start Pogba], the decision was down to him. With Ander Herrera injured, I had only two options, Scott McTominay or Pogba.
“If I played Scott, I would have two kids and a new player [Fred] in midfield. So I asked Paul and he put himself forward for the team and was very, very good for us.”
Pogba has been touted to have a solid third season at United following his impressive World Cup exploits and he couldn’t have made a better start.
The 23-year-old will be looking to play a pivotal role when United visit Brighton & Hove Albion at the AMEX Stadium next Sunday as the 18-19 title bid continues.
