Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has stepped aside from international football with immediate effect.
The 32-year-old told Chelsea TV that he’s aware that Gareth Southgate wants to develop young players and as such, he feels like the time is right to step aside.
I can see it is now going to a younger generation and I think it is the perfect time for me to take a step back.

However, Cahill did say that if there was ever a time where he was needed, due to injuries, then he’d happily answer the call to play for England once again.
I’ve been hugely honoured to play for my country and I would never shut the door. I’ve said that if there are injuries in the future and I’m needed to come and play then, of course, I’m available.
Cahill made his England debut in 2010 and went on to earn 61 caps for his country.
