BBC: Man United's stance on Mourinho following Spurs defeat confirmed

Manchester United’s hierarchy remain confident in Jose Mourinho’s ability to turn around the club’s fortunes despite the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last night, according to the BBC‘s Simon Stone.

The 55-year-old was under enormous pressure to deliver a result at Old Trafford following a shambolic performance against Brighton and Hove Albion the weekend before.

And his team starting well, enjoying the better of the first half and almost going ahead, only for the positive response to turn into a nightmare as Harry Kane and Lucas Moura netted twice in as many minutes, with the latter adding a third later on.

According to Stone, however, the second half capitulation has not changed the club’s stance on the manager.

What Ed Woodward and Co saw last night was not a performance anywhere near as insipid as what was on display at Brighton. If anything, United’s display was quite the opposite: unified, energetic, pressing together, looking to break into space up the pitch, creating chances (they had 23 shots). On another day, perhaps that Romelu Lukaku strike went in and changed the complexion of the game.

And yet, despite all of that, United lost 3-0. That Mourinho got a response from his players and it was nowhere near enough – and in fact still descended into chaos – shows the problems at Old Trafford to be worryingly deep, and perhaps irreversible.
