Chelsea star backs teenager to make a mark this season at Stamford Bridge

Cesar Azpilicueta is backing Chelsea youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi to make a mark in the first-team squad this season.

Speaking to the London Evening Standard following Chelsea’s penalty shoot-out defeat to Arsenal, Azpilicueta believes the young winger is showcasing just how talented he is.

Callum is very talented. He has shown great character, great quality and is playing very well. His performances during pre-season have been very good and now it’s up to him to keep up that level.

If he keeps doing that he will be very important for the team. It is all about consistency. He is coming from an academy level. He played with us a few times last season and he is improving. That is really important.

But he has still room to improve. He is just 17 and he can go far. Every time he went one on one against Bellerin, he was creating problems but his defensive work is also helping the team.

Despite his tender age of just 17, Hudson-Odoi has been Chelsea’s best performer throughout pre-season so far.

The young winger impressed against Perth and set up Pedro for the only goal of the game.

He also went on to shine against Inter before putting in a dazzling display against London rivals Arsenal.

The 17-year-old got the better of Hector Bellerin on several occasions on Wednesday night. He was brought down in the first half to win a penalty that Alvaro Morata would go onto miss.

Maurizio Sarri has already confirmed that the player will not be loaned out this season, but will stay within the first-team picture.

A long-term contract offer for the youngster is also believed to be on the table.
