Matteo Darmian‘s agent has confirmed his client will in fact remain at Manchester United despite continued links with a return to Serie A throughout the transfer window.
The Italian was consigned to the periphery at Old Trafford last season, failing to make a single Premier League start between November and March.
He has been tipped to rejoin Serie A for some time – Inter Milan, Napoli, Juventus have all registered interest – and even admitted recently that returning to Italy would be the best thing for his career.
But his agent, Tullio Tinto, has revealed today that Man United are unwilling to sanction a move away for Darmian this summer.
“Napoli? Mourinho and the English club do not want to give in,” he said.
“After talking with them, I think that Darmian does not move from United and, therefore, from the Premier League”.
It was my hope ahead of the transfer window that United, conscious of modern football’s need for proper full-backs, would embark on an overhaul of that position in similar fashion to what Pep Guardiola has done at Manchester City. Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna, Pablo Zabaleta were all shipped off; Danilo, Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker were all brought in. The effect was immediate, and significant.
Over on the red side of Manchester, however, this is the situation: Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young remain first choice and aren’t fit for the start of the season; Diogo Dalot is injured until September; and Darmian, a player supporters expected to be long gone by now, will most likely be starting against Leicester City.
