Victor Lindelof has issued a warning to the England team ahead of their World Cup quarter-final with Sweden in Samara this afternoon.
The Swedes produced militantly organised, steely performances in wins over South Korea and Mexico, and were unlucky to lose to Germany.
More of the same was on show against Switzerland, where Lindelof demonstrated exactly why he should be starting at Manchester United with an excellent defensive display in a 1-0 win.
And Lindelof, speaking ahead of the clash with England, made it clear that Gareth Southgate’s side will have a difficult time breaking them down.
“We are a nation to be taken seriously,” he said.
“It’s difficult to play against us, because we defend very well and it’s hard to find spaces between the lines.”
If England are to make a real impact at this tournament they will need to show more in attack against a side nobody has managed to figure out so far at these finals.
Without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, this Sweden team has transformed into a robust unit, devoid of any particular stars or discernible attacking style yet painfully hard to break down. You can see the spirit which runs through every player and creates a kind of intractable bond between them.
And England, whose goals have dried up since the Panama rout, will need to be at their most potent going forward if they are to reach the semis for the first time since 1990.
