Manchester United duo Marouane Fellaini and Romelu Lukaku both played key roles on Friday night as Belgium shocked Brazil by beating them 2-1 in the 2018 World Cup Quarter-Finals.
Fellaini and Lukaku played 90 minutes at the Kazan Arena where an own-goal by Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho and stunning strike by his club team-mate Kevin De Bruyne put Roberto Martinez’ side 2-0 up after just 33 minutes.
Substitute Renato Augusto pegged one back for the tournament favourites in the 76th minute but it proved to be just as consolation, with the number of Man United representatives in the semi-finals now up to three.
Paul Pogba helped France comfortably defeat Uruguay, who looked limp without Edinson Cavani, 2-0 to book their place in the semis, where they will now face Belgium in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, United’s English quartet Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford could also book their place in the semi-finals if Gareth Southgate’s men can beat Victor Lindelof’s Sweden on Saturday afternoon.
Lukaku provided a superb assist for Belgium’s second on the night, presenting incredible pace and power to drive from his own half with the ball for 70 yards for laying it off to De Bruyne, who struck home beautifully.
If Belgium do go all the way this year, the 25-year-old striker is in with a great chance of claiming the tournament’s golden ball and boot before resuming club duties at United ahead of the 2018-19 season.
