Olivier Giroud has claimed that he was disappointed to leave Arsenal but that he had offers from a number of clubs other than Chelsea (via Sky Sports).
It’s still going to take some to get used to the sight of Olivier Giroud in a Chelsea shirt.
The French forward made the move from Arsenal on deadline day after five-and-a-half years at the Emirates.
His transfer came on the same day as the announcement of the Gunners’ newest signing, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who arrived from Borussia Dortmund.
Now, Giroud has spoken about the move and claimed he was disappointed to leave Arsenal.
“The fact is that the coach wanted to recruit a new striker [Aubameyang]. With his signing at Arsenal, it was three top strikers, and that’s why I decided to leave,” Giroud told the French publication, Telefoot.
“I could have stayed, but I needed some solutions to get back in. I wanted to stay in the Premier League and Chelsea was a great opportunity for me.
“I had an offer from Dortmund, but they wanted a loan. Sevilla were interested, Roma contacted my agent. But when Conte told me he was counting on me, my choice was made.
“I spoke to [France manager] Didier Deschamps about my situation. He did not tell me to join Chelsea, just to change club.”
There are some interesting quotes from Olivier Giroud in there. He was disappointed to leave Arsenal but that the arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang meant that he was the third-choice striker at a club which only plays with one forward. It was a shame to see Giroud leave but the decision made sense for all parties.
