Romelu Lukaku once again shows why he can be a future captain

Romelu Lukaku has once again demonstrated why he can be a future Manchester United captain, noting how he instructed Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard on which positions to take up during Belgium’s 2-1 win over Brazil.

The 25-year-old ripped Brazil’s back four to shreds in the first half, linking up play splendidly and running from deep whilst also acting as a target man out wide.

His crowning moment came in the form of a stunning run which started outside Belgium’s box and ended with a pinpoint ball to De Bruyne, who finished superbly.

Speaking after the game, Lukaku revealed how he was telling De Bruyne and Hazard where to position themselves in a system Roberto Martinez used with him at Everton.

“I have played in this system more often at Everton [under Martinez], and I knew exactly what to do,” he said.

“I helped Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne and explained to them how they should stand and what to do, explaining once was enough, we did the job perfectly, we won deservedly.

“My all-round game is always my strong point, I try to make other players better, I want to score as much as possible and also give as many assists as possible, and I am very busy with the team, so I can be important too.”

Who would have thought a Martinez recipe, cooked at Goodison Park of all places, would be unleashed to devastating effect against Brazil to book a place in the World Cup semi-final. Football really is a wonderful sport.

And who would have predicted Lukaku to become the player he is today? At this World Cup he has presented himself as so much more than a goalscorer: an organiser, a motivator, a menace with his runs outside the box, the binding force for Belgium’s attacks, their de facto leader.
