West Bromwich Albion are reportedly eyeing a move to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on a permanent transfer this summer.
The newly-relegated Championship side are said to view Johnstone as current first-choice goalkeeper Ben Foster’s replacement after the 35-year-old refused to join the rest of the squad for pre-season training.
Johnstone has spent the last two seasons on loan at Aston Villa, helping them to the 2017-18 Championship Play-Off Final in May, but the club’s financial issues could see him join their Midlands rivals on a permanent basis.
Simon Jones of the Daily Mail reports that West Brom have made contact with Man United over the 25-year-old’s availability, and he’s likely to cost around £5million.
Johnstone has been within the ranks at United for nine years, however has never really cemented a spot in the first team and isn’t expected to renew his current deal, which is now in its final year before expiration.
Jones also reports that West Brom have held talks with Watford over a potential move to Vicarage Road for Foster, so it’s likely this story could pick up pace once that transfer is complete and the path for Johnstone to depart Old Trafford has been paved.
