New Manchester United midfielder Fred’s advisor Gilberto Silva has said his summer arrival will benefit Paul Pogba’s game next season.
Man United signed the 25-year-old Brazilian from Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk in a deal worth £50m in June and he’s expected to line up alongside Pogba and Nemanja Matic in midfield throughout the 2018-19 campaign.
Pogba, also aged 25, has struggled to make as big an impact as many expected him to since his £89m return to Old Trafford in 2016, following a four-year stint at Serie A giants Juventus.
Gilberto, who has Premier League experience in the past from his time at Arsenal, has described Fred as a versatile squad member which could benefit Pogba’s game more than any other United player.
“He’s a mixture of a No.6 and a No.8. He can play in both positions and he played in many different roles in his early days, including as a winger. He’s a real box-to-box midfielder and his final pass is really good.
“The combination with Fred can really help Pogba. With Fred, Pogba can be more free to go forward and help the guys up front, as he likes to do. I’m looking forward to see the combination with Fred, Pogba and Matic, and how Jose is going to use them.”
It’s like Jose Mourinho will look to utilise all three men in his preferred 4-3-3 system when the season kicks off, however, there is plenty of other options to fit them onto the pitch.
A 4-2-3-1 with Pogba as the more advanced player is also an option, as well as a 4-1-4-1 with Matic in the holding role or even with three-at-the-back.
Supporters are rightly getting excited at how the trio play together at Old Trafford and we’ll get a first glimpse during the pre-season tour of the United States.
