Joel Pereira N/A – Had hardly anything to do aside from gathering a couple of potshots from distance.
Antonio Valencia N/A – Forced off with a calf problem after just four minutes. Jose Mourinho will pray it’s not too serious.
Eric Bailly 6 – Played a solid 45 minutes without undergoing any real pressure. Handled the ball calmly and didn’t let anyone behind him.
Chris Smalling 6 – Passed the ball with confidence and, for once, didn’t look flustered. Not too much of a test against a tame attack.
Luke Shaw 7 – Occasionally lacked the right final product but his work rate in the baking Californian sun was superb. Bombed up and down the left hand side relentlessly.
James Garner 6 – An unremarkable but controlled midfield display by the 17-year-old. Never stopped moving across the middle into space and played things simple. A great experience for the youngster.
Ander Herrera 6 – Produced a better showing that what we saw in Arizona, displaying good energy and fight, but couldn’t get United’s midfield going.
Andreas Pereira 7 – Another extremely encouraging display on the ball from the Brazilian, picking out teammates with ease and constantly working the ball through the lines. His first two games have given Mourinho something to think about.
Tahith Chong 5 – The 18-year-old was the standout player from the Club America clash but, aside from a few decent flicks, couldn’t get into the game at all.
Alexis Sanchez 7 – Comfortably the best player on the pitch. Displayed a remarkable set of lungs following just one training session with the squad since arriving in Los Angeles, floating across the final third with endeavour and driving play forward. Found himself constantly fouled by San Jose players who couldn’t get near him. Looks in good shape.
Anthony Martial 6 – Had frustratingly few touches in the box but nonetheless committed himself to the task at No.9. Made a number of arcing runs forward but United’s final product just wasn’t there for him. Will continue to improve
Substitutes
Axel Tuanzebe 6 – Came on at half time to play at centre-back and worked well alongside Shaw, shutting down the space in between the two and moving the ball with his usual composure.
Juan Mata 6.5 – Such an elegant footballer. Added more control to United’s final third and brought players into the game, but couldn’t inject the pace needed to find a breakthrough.
Scott McTominay 5 – Never looked comfortable on the ball, often failing to return passes to his teammates. Could have done a lot better with a header from Mason Greenwood’s cross.
Lee Grant 6.5 – Once again impressed supporters by producing a flying save for a shot destined for the top corner. Patrolled the box well as San Jose improved in the second half.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah 6 – Added some vital brawn to compliment Tuanzebe’s finesse. Made a series of important sliding tackles and stopped a shot off the line – showing the last ditch brilliance he impressed Crystal Palace supporters with. Positioning could have been sharper.
Matteo Darmian 5 – Improved as the game went on but, once again, was simply too slow, with San Jose constantly finding space down his side.
