Manchester United star reacts to World Cup quarter-final exit

Fred has expressed his disappointment on social media after tournament favourites Brazil crashed out of the World Cup at the quarter-final stage.

Roberto Martinez’s Belgium side, spearheaded by the rampant Romelu Lukaku, shocked the world with an emphatic 2-1 win over Brazil on Friday.

Fred, who completed a £52.7m move to Manchester United last month, was part of the squad but didn’t receive a single minute on the pitch at the finals.

The 25-year-old has taken to social media to voice his dejection following an ultimately disappointing World Cup for him and Tite’s side overall.

“Unfortunately our dream has been postponed, and it is very painful for all of us that after so much work and dedication on the part of each player, technical commission, and staff, there is immense pain,” he wrote.

“I want to thank each one of this special group, where we learn together, suffer together, and continue to do our best to represent Brazil

“I also leave my thanks to every Brazilian that supported us from beginning to end, thank you very much.”

It was Brazil’s exit – not Argentina’s, not Spain’s, not even Germany’s – which created the greatest feeling of possibility at this World Cup for nations who haven’t historically scalped the heights on the world’s biggest sporting stage.

Fred and his Brazil team looked the best outfit by far, dominating games and moving the ball fluidly, their strength in depth adding to the menace they bring.

But they’re out, leaving the strange quartet of France, Belgium, Croatia and England. Fred will have to put the disappointment of not playing and not reaching behind the final behind him, enjoy a three week holiday, and return to Manchester ready to make an impact.
