Man United's latest signing reveals why he joined the club

Manchester United’s latest signing Lee Grant has revealed what made him join the club, explaining it was Darren Fletcher who nudged him towards the move.

The goalkeeper was a surprise target of Jose Mourinho’s since he already had the likes of David de Gea and Sergio Romero employed.

Youngster Joel Pereira were also said to be United’s backup option should anything happen to the two aforementioned seniors.

Grant was signed from Stoke City following their relegation and he’s just expected to provide cover should De Gea or Romero experience any injuries.

Fletcher came through the Red Devils’ academy and clearly still holds a deeply rooted affection for the club after nudging the keeper towards Old Trafford.

According to Manchester Evening News, Lee said to MUTV: “Fletch has been great. I managed to grab some lunch with him a week or so before I joined up with the boys and he gave me a little rundown on the club, who to avoid speaking to and who to cosy up to!

“In all seriousness he’s been great, he told me what a fantastic football club it is and he was certain I was going to enjoy my time here.”

Some reports claimed Grant was only signed as Mourinho hopes to move Pereira on loan in order to receive some crucial first team minutes.

The youngster was never likely to truly dislodge two fully fledged internationals on his own and will therefore need to temporarily prove himself elsewhere.

Other rumours have surfaced stating Lee is actually a replacement for Sergio, who is currently concerned with losing his first team spot in Argentina’s international squad.

Whatever the reason, most modern clubs have three senior goalkeepers just in case anything happens as an injury to the position often means long recovery periods.
