England medical staff will wait 24 hours before assessing the severity of an ankle strain suffered by Ashley Young during Tuesday night’s last 16 win over Colombia, according to reports.
The 32-year-old, who has been England’s first choice left wing back at this tournament, came off for Danny Rose ahead of extra time and looked to be in some discomfort.
He had performed in a way which aligned with the mood of the game itself: with a kind of belligerent grit, plenty of rough tackles, sneaky grapples, an overriding sense of cynicism and desire to spoil – rather than thwart – whatever Colombia threw at England.
And according to ESPN‘s Mark Ogden, Young’s ankle injury will be assessed on Thursday as the Englishman faces a race to be fit for the quarter-final meeting with Sweden in Samara on Saturday.
Young’s inclusion in the England side has bemused many but the steeliness on show against Colombia – that intangible big game nous, that compunction to get in the midst of everything – was an example behind why Southgate chose him for his starting XI at this tournament.
His absence against Sweden, however, may be a blessing. They are a team more than capable of defending set-pieces, which forms an important part of Young’s role, and the more mobile Rose could prove to be more effective at stretching the game.
