Fabinho has revealed that any links with Manchester United never went beyond “a few conversations” and insisted he was never subject to an official bid.
The midfielder was linked with a move to Old Trafford for three consecutive summers – most notably last summer, where it was claimed by several sources that a move was set to go through.
But no such transfer ever came close to materialising and Fabinho, to the surprise of everyone, was announced as a Liverpool player just hours after rumours of the move started spilling onto the internet.
Speaking earlier this week, Fabinho made it clear that he was never close to completing a move to Man United.
“I was never close to signing for Manchester United, no,” he said.
“I heard things said about it, but the truth is it was never a strong possibility. I won’t deny there were a few conversations about my situation with Monaco, but there was never an official offer from United.”
The story of Fabinho – just like those of Kevin Strootman or Arturo Vidal or Ezequiel Garay – is a reminder to all supporters that some rumours are, well, simply wrong. Not just wrong but baseless, non-existent, spurious, a product of some wheel of fortune in the offices of the Mirror or Corriere dello Sport.
Fabinho was always linked with United because the idea of the move made sense: a powerful defensive midfielder capable of covering ground who, crucially, can double up as a full-back to ease the pressure on Antonio Valencia.
He would have been a good signing in this respect. That’s why the story was peddled. But United were never really serious about getting him, so the idea that they ‘lost out’ to Liverpool is just slanderous.
