Jose Mourinho has claimed that England have a very real chance of reaching the World Cup final after they reached the last eight with a penalty shootout win over Colombia in Moscow.
Gareth Southgate’s men, including the steely Marcus Rashford, held their nerve in a shootout to record their first knockout win since 2006 and first ever shootout win at a World Cup.
They will now face Victor Lindelof’s Sweden in Samara on Saturday afternoon for a place in the semi-final against either Russia or Croatia.
And Mourinho, speaking on RT after the game, remarked how England have a truly unique chance to cement a place in the final.
Mourinho: “For many years England isn’t reaching this stage of the competition, so being in the quarter-finals, playing against Sweden, having for the semi-final the winner of Russia versus Croatia, I would say England has a golden chance to be in the World Cup final.” #mufc [RT]

This has been a World Cup for the ages. Describing the entirety of its thrilling, bewildering, unique entertainment – the sheer ridiculousness of it all – is impossible. The fact that England are in a quarter-final, against Sweden, after winning on penalties while Germany sit at home after exiting at the group stages gives you a fair inkling at what these finals have been like.
With that in mind, nobody can rule anything out. Every team will believe they can make the final at this point. England have done well as it is to reach this stage. They can now embark on a truly delicious, utterly unpredictable crescendo to this fantastic tournament.
