Lionel Messi has called on Barcelona chiefs to launch a bid to sign Paul Pogba this summer, according to reports from Italy.
The Frenchman had a mixed second season at Old Trafford and provoked concern in an interview prior to the World Cup by refusing to rule out leaving Manchester United.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are on the lookout for an accomplished passer in midfield following the departure of club legend Andres Iniesta
And according to Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato, Messi has instructed Barcelona’s board to place emphasis on bringing in Pogba, who dominated the midfield during France’s 4-3 win over Argentina last week.
You have to admire the way Messi, for both club and country, has transcended the role of functional player under a manager’s supervision to become a kind of third party, a sphere of influence and importance on its own. A player with that much extraterrestrial talent, backed up by countless trophies and the love of millions around the world, is indeed a kind of manager in his own right.
Whether or not this really means he wants Pogba or not is another question. That the 25-year-old played brilliantly against Messi not so long ago and fits the profile for what Barcelona need in midfield next season doesn’t immediately mean the Little Genius has earmarked him as the club’s big signing of the summer.
