After a heavily frustrating summer transfer window and pre-season tour of the United States, Jose Mourinho’s relationship with Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward is reportedly at an ‘all-time low.’
Following Man United’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool in Michigan on Saturday night, Mourinho revealed that he had given Woodward a list of five players he’d like to see arrive during the transfer window, but only two of those names are thought to have arrived.
Brazilian midfielder Fred signed for £52m from Shakhtar Donetsk to fill the void left by the retired Michael Carrick and 19-year-old Diogo Dalot joined for £19m from Porto to provide strong competition for newly-instated captain Antonio Valencia.
Lee Grant has also arrived as third choice goalkeeper, but there are still positions that need addressing which haven’t – central defence, left-back and right wing to be precise.
Now The Daily Mail report that Mourinho’s relationship with Woodward is at an ‘all-time low’ but that’s just the start of the problems being to unravel at United.
The United manager’s negativity throughout the course of pre-season has apparently been ‘poorly received’ by several players and is threatening to damage the strong harmony currently amongst the squad.
Woodward is said to be reluctant to offer Mourinho funds to bring in marquee names before selling first, with Anthony Martial and Matteo Darmian wanting out before the 2018-19 season kicks off.
All the signs are pointing towards another case of third-season syndrome with Mourinho, let’s hope that isn’t the case.
