Jose Mourinho has provided an injury update on Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia after he was forced off with a calf problem against San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday night.
Man United played out an uninspiring 0-0 stalemate in the scorching heat at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California but Valencia had to leave the pitch after just seven minutes.
Many supporters spectating the match hoped it was just a precautionary measure ahead of the busy pre-season schedule as part of preparations for a big 2018-19 campaign, but Mourinho confirmed the 33-year-old is injured after full-time.
Speaking to MUTV, Mourinho revealed: “He’s injured. We need to get used to it. Last season he was already on this kind of situation and probably this season we’re going to have more of that.”
His quotes didn’t just sound like injury confirmation, but almost as if he believes the Ecuadorian is declining, or at least ageing, which could mean he plays a less important role throughout the season to come.
There were hopes that Valencia would be available for United’s next friendly against AC Milan in a few days’ time, but Mourinho’s quotes all-but remove that possibility.
With new £19m man Diogo Dalot not expected to return to action until September, Valencia’s injury could delay Matteo Darmian‘s inevitable departure from Old Trafford, so let’s hope ‘Tony V’ is back fit sooner rather than later.
