Arsenal have reportedly inserted a break clause in Unai Emery’s contract to avoid a repeat of the situation with Manchester United and David Moyes (via The Times).
Arsene Wenger’s departure from Arsenal has drawn many comparisons with Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from Manchester United in 2013.
Both men spent a couple of decades at their respective clubs and experienced great success.
Now, it seems that Arsenal are keen to avoid repeating some of the mistakes which United made in the years after Ferguson’s departure with regards to his replacement.
David Moyes was handed a six-year deal in 2013 and the club was forced to pay his contract in full the following season when they dismissed him.
Arsenal must be eager to avoid a repeat of that situation after inserting a break in new head coach Unai Emery’s contract.
Emery has signed a three-year deal but the clause means that the club can dismiss him after two years without needing to compensate for the third.
It’s a prudent decision from the club as we enter an era of many uncertainties. Unai Emery is a promising appointment and many Arsenal fans are excited for what will happen next season. However, if things don’t work out then the club won’t be left out of pocket.
