Manchester City have dealt a blow to their neighbours by agreeing a £43.1m deal to sign the hotly pursued Jorginho from Napoli, according to reports.
The Italian emerged on the club’s radar last season amid a series of composed displays at the base of midfield under Maurizio Sarri.
Jose Mourinho has already completed the signing of midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk but many supporters feel as if one reinforcement won’t be enough to bridge the gap with Pep Guardiola next season.
Who that second midfielder will be remains uncertain, but the Telegraph‘s James Ducker has revealed that it certainly won’t be Jorginho, who will move to the Ethiad imminently.
United’s pursuit of Jorginho significantly cooled back in January when Man City gave them a free run at signing Fred by placing emphasis on signing Aymeric Laporte instead, alongside targeting the Napoli man ahead of the summer transfer window.
Either way, Jorginho, a midfielder who relies on playing in triangles and working under a zonal system, made it clear earlier this year that he wouldn’t play under a manager like Mourinho.
“I think that I could fit (in the Premier League),” he said. “It depends on who else is around me – I need players with the same characteristics that I have.”
“There are English teams with this style of play, ball on the ground, quick transitions, high pressure. If one of those teams wanted me, I could fit and the other way round. My football way is not an usual one.”
