David de Gea is “close” to agreeing a new contract with Manchester United that will make him the highest paid goalkeeper in the world, according to Spanish media outlet Marca.
The Spaniard has enjoyed his best ever season at Old Trafford, winning the ‘Player of the Year’ award for the fourth time in fifth years and securing his first ‘Golden Glove’ award.
Talk of a new contract has intensified concurrently with De Gea, following a poor mistake against Portugal last Friday, expressing disquiet at the way he was treated in the Spanish media and by supporters.
And according to Marca‘s Luis Rojo, the club has been in talks with De Gea since the start of the year and have struck an agreement which will see the 27-year-old earn a gross net of €21m every year for five years, working out at around €400,000 a week.
De Gea came extremely close to joining up with Real Madrid in 2015, only for documentation errors to cause the deal to collapse during the final seconds of the transfer window. He ultimately signed a new contract at Old Trafford a few days later, which expires at the end of next season.
The importance that comes with him committing his long term future to United cannot be understated – and cements his status as a legend of the club.
