Arsenal are interested in signing Marouane Fellaini on a free transfer this summer as his Manchester United contract looks set to expire at the end of the month, according to reports.
Fellaini’s wage demands have been a major stumbling block in negotiations, despite Jose Mourinho’s eagerness to keep the Belgium international, and Man United are unwilling to fulfil them, meaning he’s likely to become a free agent on July 1.
The 30-year-old powerhouse has already rejected two contract approaches because he wants a significant increase to his already-extortionate £80,000-a-week wage and now he could join Premier League rivals Arsenal.
Paul Hirst of The Times reported on Monday afternoon that Arsenal’s interest in Fellaini is genuine and he is more likely to move to the Emirates Stadium than put pen to paper on a new deal at United.
New manager Unai Emery is a known admirer of Fellaini and wanted to sign him when he was in charge of Paris Saint-Germain, but could face competition from Serie A club AC Milan.
Since joining United for £27.5m in 2013, Fellaini hasn’t been the most popular figure amongst fans but all three of his managers – David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Mourinho – have seen him as a key member of the squad.
With the imminent signing of Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred and with another on Jose Mourinho’s wish list, it’s unlikely Fellaini will be seen as a huge loss amongst fans, even if he does stay in the Premier League.
