Phil Jones has stressed that Manchester United would not have had a good season even if they won the FA Cup to compliment finishing second place in the Premier League.
Jose Mourinho’s men secured second place in the table last week and finished the campaign on 81 points – 11 more than their previous best in the post-Fergie era.
They will have the chance to claim their third piece of silverware in the space of two seasons against Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
But Jones, speaking to the BBC, has emphasised that Man United can only consider themselves to have enjoyed a good season if they won the Premier League and another trophy.
“Finishing second and winning the FA Cup would be satisfactory,” he said.
“But I wouldn’t say successful. Success for Manchester United is winning the Premier League and another trophy, and having a good run in another cup competition.”
Winning three trophies in two years, along with moving from sixth place to second, can only be a good thing – a sign, above all, of this team slowly but surely developing a sense of resilience and big game knowhow under Mourinho.
But you sense supporters, following several years of poor league performances and European underachievement, will not fully warm to Mourinho and his team unless they can take proper steps in the two competitions they used to dominate: the Premier League and Champions League.
Mark my words: if they start to do that, the style of football espoused by Mourinho won’t matter.
