Paul Pogba has refused to rule out the prospect of leaving Manchester United this summer.
The Frenchman has had a mixed second season at Old Trafford, suffering a period on the bench amid a series of underwhelming displays in February whilst also delivering spellbinding midfield performances against the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
Pogba stated earlier in the season that, despite his troubles under Jose Mourinho, he was not thinking about moving away from Old Trafford in the summer.
But the 25-year-old, speaking to French TV station Canal+, has refused to completely rule out leaving Old Trafford in the summer.
“You’re never sure of anything,” he said. “Contractually, it’s on, yes.”
This summer has the potential to be abysmal in the eyes of United supporters: Marouane Fellaini, for example, could be given a new contract while the club only makes one additional midfield signing, with Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young continuing as first choice full-backs as Anthony Martial leaves for Chelsea.
All of those things are a real – and horrific – possibility. But that would all seem like nothing if United, once again, allow Pogba to leave the club under a cloud of disappointment and speculation about what might have been. Like him or not, he is the beating heart of this team – the one who wants the ball when nobody else does.
Seeing him depart would set United way back. It would be one of the biggest transfer mistakes ever made in modern history.
