Michael Carrick has noted that he has become a die hard Manchester United fan over the years after receiving a special recognition award at the annual ‘Player of the Year’ awards ceremony at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
The 36-year-old, who has only managed three starts this season due to injury problems, will hang up his boots at the end of the campaign to mark an end to 12 years in a Man United shirt.
He will assume a role in Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff next season and the boss gave an excellent tribute to Carrick at the awards ceremony, along with a whistle and some advil.
Speaking at the ceremony, Carrick remarked how he’d become something of a die hard red over the years.
“It’s the sacrifices you make to try to be as good as you can,” he said. “I’ve always tried to give my best. I’ve had an unbelievable time here but I’m looking forward to the future.”
“Hopefully, I’ve got one more game to play but I’m thankful for everything. I’m quite happy with the ending. I’m calm about it.
“To the fans, I’ve turned into one of you now. I support this club home and away now. We’ve got a great spirit we need to get keep that and need to stick together.”
Mourinho, rounding off his accolade to Carrick, summed it up nicely by saying that “a big player is leaving but a big man is staying.”
The 55-year-old is a man whose meticulous love for the minutiae of the game outstrips most managers in the modern game. There aren’t many managers who go into the same detail – whether in press conferences or training sessions – about the beautiful game.
It is therefore no small testament to Carrick that Mourinho has with open arms invited the 36-year-old to join his coaching team next season. The boss admires those who truly love the game, the graft, the struggle of day-to-day life on the pitch, and Carrick is unquestionably one of them.
