Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke has dismissed Jose Mourinho’s current tactical set up of his squad and insisted it’s not in line with the club’s history.
The Portuguese manager is known to be a coach who prefers setting his team’s up on the counter and that has irritated some fans.
United have a history of playing attacking, direct football and Yorke is clearly aggrieved by what he’s witnessed so far.
Mourinho would certainly feel his methods are justified after improving the club’s league form and winning the Carabao Cup and Europa League with their being potential on him getting his hands on the FA Cup trophy as well.
For all the criticisms there’s clear results that are hard to argue against though the former Red Devil is happy to do so.
According to the Independent, Dwight said: “If you are on the front foot playing attacking football and you want to score goals, that is what people want to pay money to watch.
“I remember when we were playing Liverpool away from home and we recorded one shot in the whole match. That’s not Man United. You want people go out and express themselves.
“You are hoping one of your big talents produces a magic moment that will go out and win you the game. United are waiting for that one moment and secure a 1-0 advantage. That is not the way we play. It’s a load of crap, in my opinion.”
The truth is it’s difficult to completely criticise Jose when it’s clear the squad is not quite his just yet with there being hope he can address that in the summer transfer window.
The former Real Madrid manager had previously expressed that he likes to drill repetitive tactical exercises for his defenders but leaves complete freedom to his attackers.
While it sounds good on paper, it could sometimes mean that his attackers look devoid of any ideas on how to break down opposition.
