Gianluca Di Marzio has confirmed that Jose Mourinho sees Paul Pogba as unsellable this summer and wants him to play in a midfield trio with Fred and Nemanja Matic next season.
Manchester United have reached an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk to sign Fred for £44m, with the move set to be finalised next week.
Pogba is expected to stay at the club but did refuse to rule out a move away from Old Trafford earlier this week.
And according to Di Marzio, the 55-year-old, despite his occasionally frosty relationship with Pogba this season, does not want to sell him under any circumstances over the summer.
The Frenchman has too often found himself trapped in a midfield – either as a pivot or trio – devoid of players with the same kind of thrust and desire to move the ball forward.
But with Fred he has a genuinely exciting midfield partner: a player who can dribble, pass through the lines, create chances, score goals, and indeed cover ground quickly. Too often the emphasis has been sole with Pogba to pull United out of a slumber, with little movement in front of him and even less alongside him.
Supporters will desperately hope that changes next season.
