Gary Neville believes that Jose Mourinho would snap up the chance to sign Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino if given the chance.
Liverpool’s campaign has been dominated by the remarkable Mohamed Salah, who has claimed 43 goals in all competitions.
But Firmino has been an indispensable presence alongside the Egyptian, netting 26 times and producing 15 assists.
Speaking on Monday Night Football, Neville opined that Mourinho, or any top manager, would jump at the chance to sign the Brazilian.
“When I watch Liverpool, [Roberto Firmino] is the catalyst for everything they do,” he said.
“I think if you were Guardiola, you would want him as your striker. If you were Mourinho – you’d want him. If you were Real Madrid, Barcelona – you’d want him.”
This is, of course, not a transfer which will happen. At least not in the foreseeable future. But Firmino has mastered a role this season that Mourinho, over the summer, may want to look at further.
That second striker role, not quite a No.10 but not quite a frontman either, encourages the quick close control play around the box that Mourinho has started to favour following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez, who has occupied this position beforehand.
United rely on that ‘killer pass’ under Mourinho rather than a kind of wider plan, and the presence of a man playing just off Romelu Lukaku – as opposed to leaving him isolated at times – could prove to be a successful for Mourinho next term.
