Arsene Wenger has hinted that he was forced to step down as Arsenal boss after claiming that the timing of his announcement wasn’t really his decision (via The Guardian).
It’s a story which we may not know both sides of for some time, if ever as Arsenal fans digest the news that Arsene Wenger will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
Arsene Wenger’s announcement came as some shock not just for its timing but because it appeared to be out of character for the Frenchman.
Wenger has always been known for his determination which has often bordered on stubbornness as the club’s boss so it was strange to hear Ivan Gazidis’ words last week.
“There’s been a conversation, Arsène has made his decision and now that process [regarding a successor] begins,” Gazidis said in a press conference last Friday.
The timing was a shock and now, Arsene Wenger has been asked why he will not be seeing out the remaining year of his contract and, instead, stepping down in the summer.
“The timing was not really my decision,” Wenger replied. “For the rest, I have spoken about it already.”
It’s an interesting response from Arsene Wenger and one that hints that there is far more to this story than the club’s official line. It’s still unclear whether Wenger is leaving through his own volition or is being forced out by the club’s board.
