Player Ratings: Pogba hauled off by Mourinho but everybody embarrassing vs West Brom

David de Gea 6 – Made a top save from Jake Livermore early on, and will rightly point to his defence for how West Brom’s goal went in.

Antonio Valencia 6 – Commanding as usual on the right hand side, coping well with James McClean, but once again painfully one dimensional going forward.

Chris Smalling 7 – Kept the potentially dangerous Salomon Rondon quiet with relative ease. Looked assured whenever West Bromwich Albion committed bodies forward.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Handled the ball perhaps too carefully at times. Could have stepped out into midfield more in the first half but defended astutely on the whole.

Ashley Young 5 – This was another one of those games where the Englishman, above all, just looked too slow – especially going forward.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Lost the ball on too many occasions in the first half but ultimately did his job at the base of midfield. Improved as the game went on.

Ander Herrera 5 – His role against Manchester City was clear and well executed, but it was completely in the opposite here. Taken off at half time.

Paul Pogba 5 – He was last weekend’s hero but this time around looked sluggish and sloppy on the ball. Couldn’t drive United forward.

Juan Mata 6 – Roamed across the pitch with intent and craft, always looking to probe for gaps, but too often got caught on the ball.

Alexis Sanchez 5 – A frustrating display. Plenty of energy and graft on the ball but, ultimately, never really picked up a good position.

Romelu Lukaku 5 – Forced Ben Foster into making a superb save, yet that was his only real moment in the box. Culpable at the back for West Brom’s goal.

Substitutes

Jesse Lingard 5 – Came on for the second half to play at No.10 and brought some added energy to the affair but largely struggled when it came to locating space.

Anthony Martial 6 – Without doubt United’s crispest player on the ball. Demonstrated genuine intent and made inroads down the left. Just lacked execution – which is to be expected given his recent lack of minutes.
