Nemanja Vidic has lambasted Manchester United’s lack of movement in a woeful 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
Jose Mourinho’s side was lethargic, uninventive, dull and wasteful against the Premier League’s worst team who had won just three games all season previously. The loss handed Manchester City the title.
Vidic said the defeat was down to a failure to move the ball at speed against a West Brom side who were always going to sit back at Old Trafford.
“I didn’t expect this,” Vidic conceded. “I thought Man United today didn’t move the ball fast enough, they didn’t move without the ball enough.
“That’s what you get against teams who come to Old Trafford and defend deep and defend [in the] middle.
“They couldn’t get through.”
Mourinho started with players who would suit an intricate style of play who could pass through a deep West Brom defence.
Hence, Juan Mata came into the side for Jesse Lingard. Yet Mata was poor, Alexis Sanchez couldn’t create anything and a midfield three of Herrera-Pogba-Matic did little.
Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Lingard were all brought on to inject pace into the side. That couldn’t change the game either.
United were woeful, and had the wrong attitude. Complacency is unacceptable in a game that still matters despite the inevitability of Man City winning the title.
