The Frenchman has been in charge of the club since 1996 and heralded in an era of incredible success for the club.
The seven FA Cup titles and three Premier League titles – including one unbeaten season – put him down as Arsenal’s most successful ever manager.
But Arsenal haven’t been near that level for some time. The last few years have sparked discontent and apathy amongst Gunners supporters.
Wenger signed a two-year deal last season but has today issued a statement saying that he will not see out his contract and will instead step down at the end of the season.
“After careful consideration and following discussions with the club, I feel it is the right time for me to step down at the end of the season,” Wenger’s statement read.
“I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years.
“I managed the club with full commitment and integrity.
“I want to thank the staff, the players, the Directors and the fans who make this club so special.
“I urge our fans to stand behind the team to finish on a high.
“To all the Arsenal lovers take care of the values of the club.
“My love and support for ever.”
It’s a sad day for Arsenal Football Club. Arsene Wenger has been the most successful manager in Arsenal’s history and his announcement today has come as some shock. Let’s hope everyone at the club gets behind Wenger in the coming weeks and gives him the send-off he deserves.
