Manchester United have stepped up their efforts to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred after Manchester City pulled out of the race to sign the Brazilian, according to reports.
The 25-year-old looked set to join Man City over the January transfer window but Pep Guardiola decided to focus his efforts on signing America Laporte instead.
Shakhtar chief executive Sergei Palkin has made it clear that his client would indeed move to one of the Manchester clubs over the summer transfer window.
And according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, Man United have intensified their efforts to sign Fred in the summer after City pulled out of the race to sign him, establishing interest in Napoli’s Jorginho instead.
Mourinho reiterated following last weekend’s win over Tottenham Hotspur wants to make two midfield additions over the summer: a holding midfielder to replace Michael Carrick and a player capable of bringing momentum and strength going forward on the right hand side of a midfield three.
And Fred, without a doubt, fulfils the former having just enjoyed his finest season of his career at the base of Shakhtar’s midfield, impressing club scouts with his passing range and tidiness on the ball.
There is a certain languid, effortless feel to his passing that pleases the eye. His addition to the midfield, playing behind Pogba and whoever replaces Marouane Fellaini, would take Mourinho closer to the kind of midfield he wants.
