Manchester United target Dayot Upamecano has admitted that as a youngster he wished to play for the club and has his sights firmly set on Old Trafford.
The young star has reportedly been keenly watched by Jose Mourinho’s staff and he’s considered to be one of the highest prospects in European football.
Upamecano currently plays for RB Leipzig and has been a mainstay for them making 36 appearances across all competitions this season.
The central defender would certainly not come for cheap considering he just completed a transfer to the Bundesliga club in January 2017.
However, his public admittance of a desire to play for United could work in Mourinho’s favour should the interest turn into something real.
According to Metro, Dayot said to Telefoot: “As a youngster, you dream of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, but to get there, you have to work. I’m very proud of myself, very happy. I have to keep going in the same direction.
“I have to aim higher. My preference for the moment is Leipzig. Afterwards, we’ll see.”
The Red Devils currently have five out and out centre-backs employed at the club in the shape of Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof.
There are other players who have featured in the same position such as Daley Blind or even Matteo Darmian but they’re unlikely candidates.
On loan prospects however are Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe with Jose said to highly rate them both so Manchester United fans could see them feature next season.
With the young Dutchman said to be set to fight Antonio Valencia for the right-back spot next season it could be the latter who joins the fight for the centre-back positions.
If the Portuguese manager truly values Tuanzebe then a move for Dayot Upamecano seems unlikely but with reports of a major summer clear out, there may just be room for them both.
