Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s move to LA Galaxy has paved the way for Manchester United to secure the long term future of David de Gea with a £350,000-a-week contract, according to reports.
The Spaniard’s contract – signed in the aftermath of his botched move to Real Madrid – expires at the end of next season.
He has enjoyed his finest campaign since arriving at Old Trafford in 2011, picking up 16 clean sheets in the Premier League – a tally which has been enough to win the ‘Golden Glove’ over the last five campaigns – in 31 games.
And according to the Sun’s Daniel Cutts, the departure of Zlatan – who enjoyed a truly stupendous debut on Saturday – has freed up the funds for United to make De Gea the club’s second highest earner behind Alexis Sanchez.
The reports claims that the Spaniard continues to attract interest from Real, but this is simply not true: Florentino Perez has not made any concrete attempt to sign De Gea since that hilarious deadline day in 2015, and looks set to move for Roma and Brazil keeper Alisson Becker instead.
De Gea is without doubt the only United player you could label as consistently world class and that notion needs to be reflected in a new deal – preferably set in stone before the World Cup.
