Manchester United star Jesse Lingard admitted scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final back in 2016 was a huge sigh of relief for him.
The Englishman was a part of the squad who won the prestigious trophy in Louis van Gaal‘s final season at the club before Jose Mourinho was brought in.
Lingard wasn’t as much of a regular starter as he is now under the Portuguese manager’s watch but was able to perform on the day to start a growing reputation of scoring in cup finals.
The academy product is a great source of pride for many United fans though questions were initially raised on what he brings to the squad.
Supporters were on the fence when it concerned him though it’s fair to say that’s no longer the case and they’ll certainly hope he can help the team progress to the final once more.
According to the Express, Jesse said: “It was a huge sigh of relief for me. There was a weight lifted off my shoulders with that goal. It really helped my confidence.
“Everyone is different, aren’t they? I am bubbly and I try to take that on to the pitch and enjoy the moments when it goes well. You have to.
“But it’s a long, hard road coming through an academy system, especially at a club like United. Supporters don’t always see that. You see the players here on the wall who came before me.
“It’s a lot to live up to. But I feel settled now. I am really happy.”
The Red Devils are set to take on Tottenham on Saturday afternoon for the semi-finals of the competition and will know a win is crucial, particularly since it will define their season.
Jesse Lingard could potentially start the fixture though there are reports that Marcus Rashford will get the start instead.
