Manchester City look likely to beat Manchester United to the signing of Napoli midfielder Jorginho this summer, according to reports.
The Italian midfielder has dazzled at the base of midfield under Maurizio Sarri this season, making 29 starts out of 34 Serie A games and recently producing a sumptuous display against Juventus.
Man City and Man United have registered interest in the 26-year-old ahead of departures for Yaya Toure and Michael Carrick respectively over the transfer window.
And according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, City have stepped up their efforts to bring Jorginho to the Ethiad next season but have abandoned their pursuit of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.
Jorginho is a player who will no doubt slot perfectly into Guardiola’s side alongside Fernandinho, delicately finding that space between defensive midfield and the attacking third to make City’s passing just that bit more rapid.
Whether he would work under a Mourinho set-up, however, is another question. Having him alongside Nemanja Matic as another passing defensive midfielder is too negative, and the Italian would not have the space in midfield granted to him by Napoli’s – or City’s – effective zonal positioning.
He even implied last month that he would not be suited to playing at Old Trafford, issuing something of a come-and-get-me plea to the blue half of Manchester in the process.
“There are English teams with this style of play, ball on the ground, quick transitions, high pressure,” he said. “If one of those teams wanted me, I could fit and the other way round. My football way is not an usual one.”
