Manchester United target Gareth Bale has refused to rule out the prospect of leaving Real Madrid in the summer.
The Welshman emerged on Man United’s radar last summer amid suggestions he was surplus to requirements under Zinedine Zidane, but Jose Mourinho ultimately opted against moving for him.
Bale looks set to depart the Bernabeu this summer following another frustrating season marred by injuries and infrequent starts.
His agent Jonathan Barnett has flat-out denied the prospect of his client leaving Madrid, but the winger himself, asked about his future ahead of Real’s clash with Bayern Munich this evening, was notably more coy.
“You can never rule out anything in football,” he said. “Currently, I play football at Real Madrid and I enjoy that.”
“Bayern have a fantastic squad and already in the past they have always been one of the most successful clubs in Europe.
“It’s an honour for everyone to be linked with this club. But as of now I am a Real Madrid player.”
This response is reflective of a man who, all things considered, enjoys playing at Madrid and wants to keep doing so – which goes some way to explaining the public stance adopted by his agent.
But you can also sense, buried subtly in his words, that Bale doesn’t expect to be a Madrid player for much longer. The club should win the Champions League once again this season but their league form has significantly dipped and will, no doubt, stimulate something of a spending spree in the summer and a concomitant exodus.
And Bale, an often useful but too often sidelined player at Madrid, is likely to be part of this revolution of sorts over the transfer window.
