Ian Wright believes young Manchester United attacking duo Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford should leave the club this summer.
The Arsenal legend says the pair must be thinking of departures in search of game time and a better-suited style of play if current manager Jose Mourinho stays in charge.
Speculation regarding Martial’s future surfaced on Tuesday as a bumper five-year contract at Old Trafford was reportedly turned down due to concerns with time on the pitch, and Wright thinks the French star would be the more likely to leave during the close season.
On Sky Sports‘ daily show ‘The Debate’, Wright explained: “[Martial] has almost fallen off a cliff with Mourinho and if he had to let one of [Martial or Rashford] go it would probably be Martial.”
Before Alexis Sanchez’ January arrival, both men were in hot form and have statistically enjoyed their best career campaigns so far, but the Chilean winger has limited starts for the pair, with Rashford starting just one Premier League match since, during which he scored twice as United beat rivals Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford last month.
Martial had to watch the full 90 minutes of Saturday’s Manchester derby triumph from the bench, while Rashford made an eight-minute cameo appearance, and Wright would not be surprised if they were tempted to head for the exit door.
“They should be thinking about it with everything that’s happening and the way United play.”
Despite Wright’s claims, Rashford has been the most used player since Mourinho took charge in the summer of 2016, making 97 appearances, and had played a part in every single game this term up until United’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle United in February.
It is incredibly difficult to see both prospects leave Old Trafford in the summer, but with the Portuguese boss expected to boost his attacking options further during the transfer window, it could spell the end for one of their Manchester United careers.
