David de Gea has expressed his delight at what has been his best season at Manchester United since joining the club in 2011.
The Spaniard has claimed a total of 21 clean sheets throughout the campaign and looks on course to win the Premier League ‘Golden Glove’ award.
He has made a series of jaw-dropping stops, most notably at Anfield in October and more recently in wins over Crystal Palace and Swansea City, earning a place in the PFA ‘Team of the Year’ in the process.
And De Gea, reflecting on the 2017/18 campaign, noted that he was pleased with his progress ahead of the World Cup.
“Yeah, I’m pretty pleased with my performance,” he said. “It’s been a fairly complete, all-round set of performances from me.”
“I’ve felt good, felt fit and in good form physically throughout the season. Let’s hope that with these last few games to go before the end of the season I continue the form, then leading into the World Cup, which is an important time for Spain.”
It tends to slip under the radar these days, but without the consistent brilliance of De Gea between the sticks United would be in a overwhelmingly worse place this season.
In true Roger Federer or Andres Iniesta fashion, the Spaniard plays will a kind of ice cold demeanour, as if nothing even comes close to fazing him. Never sweating, never panicking. The number of times he has produced a safe that even has the opposition support applauding is a testament to his universally acknowledged brilliance: Stoke City, Sevilla, Manchester City, Arsenal are just a selection of examples.
Nobody in modern football receives the same recognition for their shot-stopping capabilities as De Gea, and rightly so.
